Why your formation matters
Your formation is the foundation of your tactical setup in any football manager game. It determines how many players you commit to attack, midfield and defence, and it shapes every chance your team creates or concedes. In My Football Game, choosing the right formation is one of the biggest factors in winning matches.
There are 18 formations available, from classic setups like 4-4-2 to modern systems like 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3. Each has strengths and weaknesses, and the best formation for your team depends on your players' positions, ratings and attributes.
Popular formations and when to use them
4-4-2 — The classic balanced formation. Two banks of four give defensive stability while two strikers provide a constant goal threat. Best for squads with two strong forwards and hard-working wingers.
4-3-3 — Attacking and wide. Three forwards stretch the opponent's defence, while three midfielders control possession. Best when you have pacey wingers and a dominant centre-forward.
4-2-3-1 — The modern default. Two holding midfielders protect the defence while an attacking midfielder and two wingers feed a lone striker. Excellent balance between attack and defence.
3-5-2 — Midfield overload. Five midfielders dominate possession, but you need strong centre-backs who can defend without full-back cover. Best for teams with outstanding midfielders.
5-3-2 — Defensive solidity. Three centre-backs and two wing-backs create a wall, while two strikers wait for counter-attacking chances. Use against stronger opponents.
How to choose your formation
The golden rule: fit the formation to your players, not the other way around. Check your squad screen and identify where your best players are. If your strongest players are defenders and midfielders, play a compact system. If you have elite forwards, play a formation that gets them the ball.
Position familiarity matters in My Football Game. A player in his natural position performs significantly better than one played out of position. Always check the position match before finalising your lineup.
